Research Associate and Manager

The Bruyère Research Institute partners with Bruyère, the University of Ottawa and other stakeholders to conduct relevant and practical health sciences research related to medical education and improving the quality of life for the aging population and people requiring continuing care.


Function Summary

We are currently seeking a full-time Research Associate and Manager to support Dr. Clare Liddy’s and Dr. Sathya Karunananthan’s program of research. Dr. Liddy is a senior investigator with the Bruyere Research Institute, and Chair of the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Ottawa. Dr. Karunananthan is an Investigator at BRI and an Assistant Professor at the Interdisciplinary School of Health Sciences at the University of Ottawa. Our research teams are dedicated to improving access to specialty care using digital health technologies such as electronic consultations. We prioritize research activities in areas such as Frailty, Dementia, and Chronic Pain, with a particular emphasis on addressing health equity among underserved populations.

This role will be responsible for:

Providing direct supervision of assigned staff and manage the administrative responsibilities of a program of academic activities (research, education, etc.) as well as human resources and finance functions.

Interpreting, implementing, and ensuring compliance with policies, operating plans and processes.

Forecasting, planning, and preparing the program of academic activities operating budget; ensuring effective human resource allocation through recruitment, selection, training, coaching, and performance management.

Leading and supporting research activities and playing a key role in conducting research projects, including study design, data analysis and interpretation, as well as contributing to grant development and research ethics applications.


Main duties and responsibilities

  • Overseeing the day-to-day activities of research projects under general supervision
  • Allocating duties as needed to ensure timely completion of all research and administrative tasks
  • Coordinating logistics for research projects, including plans for data collection and analysis, facilitating meetings, and establishing project schedules, timelines, and resources
  • Drafting year-end reports for all funders
  • Collaborating with investigators and the team to meet deadlines for grants, publications, and reporting
  • Serving as the primary point of contact for all questions related to the research program, corresponding with external stakeholders and investigators
  • Connecting with partners within and outside of Bruyère to oversee research activities
  • Drafting agendas and chair meetings when required
  • Leading and supporting research projects
  • Drafting evaluation plans for evaluation activities
  • Providing support for the development and implementation of knowledge translation
  • Presenting at conferences and meetings, as required
  • Providing leadership and support to staff
  • Supervising and training graduate and summer students
  • Advising on hiring based on the needs of the team and available financial resources
  • Managing the hiring process for new employees, including creating job descriptions, screening applicants and organizing interviews
  • Supporting other project staff/participants as directed by investigators or senior staff
  • Maintaining regular touchpoints with all team members (individually or in team huddles) to assess progress, answer questions, and flag potential issues
  • Assisting in creating and justifying budgets based on grant requirements
  • Maintaining clear records of contracts with funders/research partners to ensure all obligations are met in a timely manner
  • Establishing and justifying budgets
  • Additional duties may be added as projects progress


Required Qualifications and Competencies

  • Master’s degree in a relevant field
  • Minimum three (3) years of experience, including Humna Resources, finance, budget development, knowledge of granting agency requirements, and a solid understanding of research and education principles
  • Experience with qualitative and mixed methods research
  • Proficiency in using quantitative/qualitative research software (e.g., SPSS, SAS, Nvivo)
  • Exceptional communication skills
  • Experience in the health sector, with knowledge of health professions education and practice, and an understanding of primary care in Canada
  • Proficiency with various communication tools, including web-based platforms, social media, written, and video formats
  • A solid understanding of the health system, the roles of healthcare providers, and knowledge of best professional training approaches in Canada
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively in a team environment
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks, manage overlapping project phases, and meet deadlines
  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills, with the ability to adapt to a dynamic project environment
  • Experience in health services research, an asset
  • Fluent in French and English, an asset
