The Bruyère Research Institute partners with Bruyère, the University of Ottawa and other stakeholders to conduct relevant and practical health sciences research related to medical education and improving the quality of life for the aging population and people requiring continuing care.


Function Summary

Bruyère Research Institute is looking to hire a Research Assistant to conduct relevant and practical health sciences research related to memory, technology and aging.

This role will be responsible for:
  • Supporting a variety of tasks ranging from data collection and analysis, to reporting results and more.
  • Conducting and managing day-to-day activities related to multiple projects with the Bruyère Memory Program Research Group, including the Memory Support System (MSS) project, Driving Simulator Projects, Microbiome project and Blink Oscillation EEG project.

The Research Assistant must be adaptable, flexible, and able to multi-task and thrive in a fast-paced environment.

This role requires in-person contact with participants who may have a medical illness and may require special attention. The successful candidate must exhibit empathy and be alert to participants and caregivers’ needs.


Main duties and responsibilities

  • Supporting the planning, execution and monitoring of study progress, coordination and deliverables
  • Recruiting and scheduling research participants
  • Conducting study visits per study visit schedules with study participants
  • Administering measures (e.g., cognitive screening tests, questionnaires, surveys) to study participants with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) and/or Alzheimer’s disease
  • Performing data collection and entry as well as quality control of data
  • Meeting regularly with investigators to provide recruitment and project updates
  • Communicating with multiple stakeholders (researchers, physicians, health planners, volunteers, patient representatives, etc.) to facilitate meetings, events and research projects
  • Assisting with data management and analysis
  • Assisting with writing, preparation and submission of ethics submissions, grant proposals, and manuscripts for publication
  • Preparing and editing correspondence, literature reviews, communications, presentations, scientific posters, abstracts and reports and research protocols
  • Tracking papers in progress, being submitted and published
  • Tracking participant stipend payments
  • Additional duties may be added as projects progress


Required Qualifications and Competencies

  • Bachelor’s degree in psychology or social work or life sciences, or neuroscience
  • Advanced computer skills
  • Meticulous, detail orientated and highly organized with the ability to multi-task, prioritize and meet tight timelines
  • Self-directed and able to effectively work both independently with minimal supervision and as a part of a larger team
  • Critical thinking skills and strong ability to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions
  • Excellent interpersonal skills


Preferred Competencies

  • Experience in clinical research; administration of questionnaires, cognitive tests, or interventions; and/or working with older adults
  • Comfort with and experience in health care settings, especially dealing with older adults, patients living with dementia or vulnerable populations
  • Comfort with and interest in technology, such as sensors and EEG
  • Experience with reading and synthesizing scientific literature
  • Completion of training on: International Conference on Harmonization (ICH)/Good Clinical Practice (GCP), and the Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans (TCPS 2)
  • Fluent in French and English, an asset
