The Bruyère Research Institute partners with Bruyère, the University of Ottawa and other stakeholders to conduct relevant and practical health sciences research related to medical education and improving the quality of life for the aging population and people requiring continuing care.


Function Summary

We are looking to hire a Research Coordinator I (RCI) with qualitative research experience and expertise to join the Palliative Care research team at the Bruyère Research Institute to work on projects led by Dr. Sarina Isenberg, Chair in Mixed Methods Palliative Care Research. The RCI is responsible for assisting in the oversight of day-to-day operations of research projects, including Research Ethics Board submissions and adherence, participant recruitment, and data accuracy (including collection, entry, analysis, and dissemination). This may also include the development and oversite of project budgets.

Under the mentorship and guidance of Dr. Isenberg, this role will assist with multiple research projects including storytelling in the Palliative Care Unit, end-of-life care for patients with opioid-related health harms, and the qualitative portion of a mixed methods study to develop an updated intensive care unit triage framework to be used across Canada during future pandemics. There may also be an opportunity to work on innovative co-design projects, and arts-based knowledge translation including the development of design installations. This role will also have an opportunity to support grant writing and manuscript writing with the option of taking on a first authorship role. The RCI will join a growing team, which is focused on mentorship, career development, and a positive work environment.

Dr. Isenberg is an early career researcher with a growing team, who has been a nominated principal or co-principal investigator on 31 projects (totaling $4.9 million) and a co-investigator on 29 projects (totaling $48.4 million) supported by national and international grant funding agencies. This position can be completed remotely by anyone legally entitled to work in Canada.


Main duties and responsibilities

  • Participating in recruitment activities including screening potential participants for study eligibility
  • Obtaining and documenting participant informed consent
  • Organizing and facilitating interviews and focus groups with participants
  • Assisting with qualitative data analysis
  • Collecting and entering data with study document maintenance
  • Assisting with manuscript writing, and developing presentations for academic conferences, with knowledge translation activities such as drafting abstracts
  • Assisting with literature reviews (scoping/systematic, both qualitative and quantitative)
  • Coordinating and assisting with research grant applications
  • Coordinating Research Ethics Board (REB) applications and ongoing approvals (study amendments, continuing reviews, study closure forms, etc.)
  • Managing calendar, booking project meetings
  • Drafting meeting agendas, taking meeting minutes
  • Obtaining signatures for study departmental approvals, REB submissions, and research contracts
  • Assisting with the creation and justification of budgets based on grant contents
  • Handling basic financial tasks, such as submitting invoices and expense tracking against the project budget
  • Supporting project management of research projects and grant applications
  • Additional duties may be added as projects progress


Required qualifications and competencies

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant health science-related field
  • Minimum two (2) years of relevant experience
  • Evidence of qualitative research experience and expertise
  • Strong critical thinking skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Excellent verbal and written English communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work well independently and in a team environment
  • Demonstrated excellent organizational, time management, and prioritization skills
  • Demonstrated ability to meet timelines and deadlines


Preferred qualifications and competencies

  • Master’s degree in a relevant health science-related field
  • Experience with using qualitative data analysis software
  • Evidence of quantitative research experience and expertise
  • Past involvement in the coordination or analysis of at least one mixed methods study
  • Strong interview and facilitation skills
  • Experience working with palliative/end-of-life patient and caregiver populations, and vulnerable populations
  • Tri-Council Policy Statement on Research Ethics (TCPS-2) and International Council for Harmonization of Good Clinical Practice (ICH-GCP) Certificates
  • Fluent in French and English, an asset
