Bruyère celebrates 175 years since the arrival of Mother Élisabeth Bruyère to Bytown
02/25/2020
Bruyère launched the celebrations marking the 175th anniversary of Mother Élisabeth Bruyère’s arrival to Bytown.
Like a health care hero, Mother Élisabeth Bruyère established the city’s first general hospital, created a home for the aging, opened a school, and set up an orphanage, all within three months of her arrival in Bytown in February 1845.
Today, Bruyère is proud to continue her legacy by seeing and meeting the changing health care needs of the community and continuously striving to solve problems in the health care system.
To kick-off the anniversary celebrations, staff, physicians, volunteers and board members gathered across all three Bruyère sites for a pancake breakfast.
Upon arriving 175 years ago, Mother Bruyère made an immediate and lasting impact in our city. We wish to thank Mayor Jim Watson for recognizing her important role in our community’s past, present and future by officially proclaiming Tuesday, February 25, 2020 Mother Élisabeth Bruyère Day.
We were honoured to have among us the Sisters of Charity of Ottawa as well as councilors Catherine McKenney and Mathieu Fleury.
