Director, Pharmacy and Laboratory Services

Function Summary

Reporting to the Senior Vice-President Clinical Programs, Chief Nursing Executive and Allied Health, this role is responsible for the delivery of high-quality inpatient and outpatient Pharmacy, and Laboratory Services at Bruyère.

The Pharmacy is responsible for drug distribution, drug utilization evaluation, drug formulary management and provision of clinical pharmacy services (direct patient care/pharmaceutical care model) in accordance with standards and guidelines established by the Ontario College of Pharmacists and the Canadian Society of Hospital Pharmacists. This role ensures Bruyère medication management standards are in accordance with Accreditation Canada requirements and serves as the Professional Leader for Pharmacy staff and as Secretary to the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee.

As Director of Laboratory Services, this role is responsible for establishing and maintaining Bruyère’s contractual relationship with its external laboratory service provider to ensure proficiency, accuracy and timeliness in performing test procedures and reporting their results to Bruyère’s clinical staff. This role will ensure that Laboratory Services related policies and procedures are established and will work with the laboratory service provider to establish operational standards for cost control, waste reduction, quality, safety and complete on-time delivery. This role will ensure that all necessary remedial actions are taken and documented whenever significant deviations from the laboratory’s agreed-upon performance specifications are identified. This role will monitor utilization patterns of laboratory services and advises leadership and other appropriate staff of developing trends in clinical service needs.

This role is also responsible for the resource management of Pharmacy and Laboratory Services at Bruyère, including human resources, development and control over departmental budgets, integrity of financial revenue, and timely preparation and submission of statistical and patient outcome related data. This role is responsible for development and application of departmental and corporate policies and procedures. This role is a champion of quality and patient safety.

Required Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in Pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree from an accredited university
  • Part A registration as a practicing pharmacist with the Ontario College of Pharmacists (OCP)
  • Minimum of five (5) years of progressive management /leadership experiences with a demonstrated clinical background.
  • Managerial experience in inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Fluent in English and French (Candidates who do not meet this language requirement are eligible to apply for this position and may be considered if there are no other suitable applicants who meet this requirement.)
